Reuse Topics and Subtopics

You can reuse a topic and its subtopics as a "structure" in many different publications. This can help you save time when setting up new publications and can also reduce the amount of work needed when updating the topics.

A typical example is a "chapter" topic, where the top-level topic represents the overall chapter and it has lower-level topics for each sub-section in that chapter. You can add the entire "chapter" to a different publication by reusing the "structure".

You can select a topic and its subtopics (first image) and reuse them as a structure in a different publication (second image).

To reuse a topic and its subtopics:

  1. In the Content Manager, select the publication that will reuse the content (not the publication that already contains the content). We will call this publication the "target" publication.

Paligo displays the structure view of the publication.

  2. In the Content Manager, expand the publication that already contains the content you want to reuse. We will call this publication the "origin" publication.

When you expand the publication, you can see the "forks" to the topics in the publication. The "forks" are links with IDs.

In the image, the "ACME 100" contains forks to many topics. The "Connecting to Other Systems" topic has 3 subtopics, as indicated by the arrow icon and the number at the end of the fork.

  3. Hold down the Shift key and then drag the top-level "fork" that you want to reuse into the structure view of the "target" publication.

Paligo adds a link to the top-level topic and its sub-topics. This link is shown as the name of the top-level topic and it has a reused symbol next to it.

The reused structure is added to the bottom of the publication's structure by default. You can move it to another position in the structure if you prefer, either by dragging and dropping, using the structure icons, or by using the keyboard shortcuts.
